Short update.
The wheels are back on.. for a short while at least..
The front wheel needs to be rebuilt.. nothing serious just a small mistake in wheelbuilding, so need to redo it once again.
Rear wheel is back in place, but we needed to order a new speedo drive unit as the old one was all bent.. Got the part today, so maybe the rear will be ready soon.
Snow isn’t here yet so who knows maybe a test drive soon.
Finally got the new tires on. The front wheel and brake is now “ready” and the rear is under construction as they say..
The plan was just to put on a new rear tire, but things seldom go as planned with the old engines..
The rear brake drum had to be touched on a lathe, plus needed new brake shoes&linings + a new rear sprocket..
Once we get the rear wheel back in place, then we still need to see what is the situation with the charger and the clutch.. Those should be the only bigger things left before testdrive.
So the project continues.. Bought a helmet yesterday so maybe if all goes well I could ride in the fall before the snow comes.
Just a brief status update.. the front wheel is in pieces.. I ended up buying a new front hub.. I decided to go for the one with Timken style replacable bearings.. Looks a bit shiny, but I’ll give it some rattle can olive drab later.. Also got new spokes for the front. I am keeping the Russian style 19 inch wheels, just putting on some new Avon tires.
Other new parts; I bought parkerized WLA passenger footrests to go with the buddy seat I have. Will still have to see if I need other things for the front wheel/brakes, I should have everything but once we start putting the front wheel back together I’m sure something comes up, always does..
Still considerign selling the WLA, but perhaps it would make sence the get the bike registered first and then see about the selling thing.
Time for a small update. The motor has been fired up and runs good. So Cool.
Short list below of some of the things done so far:
Currently we are working on the front wheel/tire and brakes. Need to put new bearings since the original ones are really worn out.. We’re gonna use modern bearings.. since parts are available it is always possible to return everything in original form if wished.. Next up is the rear wheel/tire and bearings.. the rear brakes seem to be in ok condition.. Then we also need to check the generator as it seems not to be charging at the moment. There are a zillion other small things that need to be done… will make a list later.
The goal is to have the bike in such condition that I can have it registered and titled in my name. So it needs to be in running condition, with lights, proper tires, brakes and such to pass the technical inspection. A friend is helping me to achieve this as I am a total newbie with motorbike and it would take me ages to get the bike ready for registration. Timewise it looks that we should be ready in April I think.
Once I get the license plates and papers for it I will then decide what to do with this bike. Well, must run it first of course, but maybe I will sell it or maybe I will continue working on it on my own to make it “perfect”..
Photos or maybe a video coming soon…
With the help of friends, the WLA project has taken a major leap forward during the past weeks.. I think I’ll keep the old lady after all.
If all goes well, I think I’ll have the bike registered before Santa comes.
UPDATE 1.10.2011 – The WLA and all the parts are sold.
Harley Davidson WLA type VII for sale.
I’m selling the bike.. The project is not moving and for some reason the motivation is no longer there..
The bike is very complete & original.. an excellent starting point for someone looking for a Harley Davidson WLA. Lend-lease bike used by the Russian Army in WWII. Comes with old hand-written Russian papers and has an added frame number tag under the seat. Motor has been replaced at some point, so the motor number is different from the number on the original tag on top of the tanks. Bike is probably in running condition, but needs work.
I have also lots of quality WLA parts that I am selling. For example a 2nd complete newly restored transmission, 2nd new Linkert carburator, new cylinders, 2 sets of new pistons, new connecting rods, new hand-made top quality buddy seat, new saddle bags, etc.
Some photos of the bike and parts:
Bike is in Finland, but I can do my best to help with shipping to anywhere in the world (the buyer will pay for the shipping costs).
UPDATE! Not sure if I will sell the bike..
